Squamish means "Birthplace of the Winds" in the Coast Salish language. For millennia, the Sko-mish or Squamish people hunted, trapped, fished and raised their families in this lush Valley until 1792 when British explorer Captain George Vancouver and his crew sailed their ship into Howe Sound. Traders, gold seekers and adventurers arrived during the next century. Later forestry surpassed farming as the foundation of the economy in Squamish. The Mamquam River is a tributary of the Squamish River.
