Through film viewing, an interactive panel, and master classes secondary school students get to work with and learn from some of Vancouver’s top film industry professionals during half- and full-day programs at the Vancity Theatre.

Students attending a film have the option of adding one of these two half-day workshops.
Workshops take place at Cineworks (1131 Howe St).
Constructing a Scene
Instructor: Ann Verrall
This workshop is designed for the budding writer, director or actor who wants to make a film, or those who are just curious about how the pros do it. How are films made? In small groups, participants will collaborate on a scene including scriptwriting, rehearsing, blocking, designing the shots… then actually shooting that prep! Students will walk away with the skills to construct their own scene.
Participants in this workshop may sign up to attend the Young Filmmakers Showcase on Thursday April 19 (details on our website). It’s an opportunity to see what other youth in BC are working on.

Light in Motion
Instructor: Cindy Mochizuki
Glow, sparkle and shine with artist Cindy Mochizuki and learn how to create a short animation using only light. Participants will use digital point-and-shoot cameras to take long exposure images that can be crafted into stop motion images that give the illusion that the light is effortlessly flying through the air.

Innovative Storytelling with iPads
Instructors: Mo Simpson, Catrina Longmuir
What are all these new devices capable of? Innovators are finding new ways to push boundaries and express themselves using new platforms and devices. Instructors Mo Simpson and Catrina Longmuir delve into the exciting new world of digital storytelling with an iPad. Students will be able to put their hands on the latest technology and learn the basics of how to make a short documentary. Students are encouraged to bring an iPad.

Sound Design Master Class
Instructor: Gordon Cobb
Good sound is a must. Students will explore the three essential ingredients of a soundtrack: dialogue, sound effects and music. Small teams will generate soundtracks to pre-rendered videos using iMovie and GarageBand. Students will walk away with a firm grasp of how to use GarageBand to achieve good sound. Instructor Gordon Cobb is a professional Sound Designer in the film industry, theatre and dance. Students are encouraged to bring a laptop (with GarageBand) and/or ear phones.

This blend of animated, documentary, and live-action shorts takes us into the past, the present and the apocalyptic future. Playful, poetic and powerful, these stories will pull you all the way in to their worlds. This program includes the NFB Oscar Nominee for Best Animated Short!

New Frontiers Panel: innovation in video storytelling

Films, games, websites, cell phones…. the world of low-budget independent media making is expanding into all sorts of formats. How does a young filmmaker get started in this changing landscape? Join some of Vancouver’s leading media making professionals in this energetic discussion about telling stories in the digital age. This panel and discussion will offer a different kind of experience to add to an exciting day of films and workshops.

Animation Masterclass
Instructor: Amy Lockhart
Through demonstrations, instructional handouts and hands-on activities, students will learn how to make jointed paper puppets, using Amy Lockhart’s trademark techniques. The workshop will focus on drawn and object animation- cut-outs, beads and feathers… You can animate anything that can fit under a camera! Using paper cut outs, we’ll begin with a short demonstration of the five types of movement (acceleration, deceleration, constant, hold and irregular) and other basic principles, such as stretch and squash. This workshop promises to give students an understanding of basic animation techniques.

Young Filmmakers Showcase

Let British Columbia’s top student filmmakers inspire your class to pursue its artistic ambitions. Young Filmmakers Showcase is a unique presentation of the best new works created by young filmmakers across British Columbia. This series of entertaining and well-crafted short films will be followed by an award presentation and jury notes. An audience award will also be determined by secret ballot. Join us for an evening of inspiration, and cast your vote. Please stay for our Closing Night Film.
Registration is easy! Pre-registration is required for school groups. Please contact our Festival Coordinator at education@r2rfestival.org to register.
