Claymation
Using plasticine, students will create and manipulate characters for a short animated film.
Available Monday and Tuesday only.
Instructor: Ensieh Rastegar was born in Shemiran, the northernmost district of the city of Tehran. Amazed by the traditional art and culture of her great grand parents, she has tried to preserve them in her animated films. She has a BA from the Multimedia University of Radio & Television in Tehran, and worked as an animation director and an assistant production manager for ten years. She is involved in R2R animation workshops over 3years.
Instructor: Scott Kilborn
Scott Kiborn is a Vancouver based animator. He has worked in a variety of animation styles from classical feature animation to experimental stop motion. His credits include features such as Space Jam and The Prince of Egypt, Saturday morning toon Mucha Lucha, commercial work for Bell, Dove and others, as well as the documentary Magical Life of Long Tack Sam. He has been conducting workshops with kids for a number of years and is developing a "how to " animation DVD with the NFB.

Students will use paper to create characters and sets. Using an animation stand and video
capture, students will create short animations.

Instructor: Tasha Brotherton
Tasha Brotherton (b. Montreal, Quebec) is an animator and filmmaker
who grew up in Skokie, Illinois, an outgrowth of Chicago. Brotherton moved to Vancouver in 2001 to study animation at The Emily Carr Institute of Art – her graduating film, Woof Woof Woof, won awards in sound design and raditude. She is currently working on an animated film in which two hands quarrel in a house; she is also an animation assistant for Reel 2 Real Animating History project held at the Vancouver History Museum and is a member of the Vancouver collaborative drawing group, The Lions. www.lionspile.ca
Digital Filmmaking
Filmmaking is not just about movie stars and expensive gadgets - it’s about camera tricks!

oldest, cheapest tricks to get the most movie bang for the movie-making buck!

Instructor: Flick Harrison
Flick Harrison is an award-winning free-form film and video maker who has worked for Battlestar Galactica, J-Lo, R.E.M., Ballet BC, Theatre Conspiracy, CBC, Amnesty International, and, oh, lots of other folks.
Handmade Film
Explore the history of film art and animation with handmade film. Students will work with different kinds of 16mm celluloid, markers, stamps and scratch tools to create beautiful works of art. At the end of the session, students will see their work projected through a 16mm projector and experience the magic of cinema. Available Wednesday and Thursday only.
Instructor: Julian Lawrence
An avid cartoonist since childhood, Julian Lawrence is an award-winning artist and illustrator specializing in comic books. Born in England and raised in Quebec, Julian has a deep knowledge and love of comic books and animation, especially European and North American genres and traditions. His work has been published and displayed internationally by many organizations including Fantagraphics Books, Editions des Plaines, the National Film Board and the Canada Council. He is an instructor at Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design as well as with the Royal Conservatory of Music’s Learning through the Arts program. Julian has also worked as a production artist on the Degrassi: The Next Generation series of graphic novels, an editor at Vancouver’s Zeroes 2 Heroes comic book company, and is also the publisher, editor and creator of Drippytown Comics, an annual compilation of various comic book artists and writers. Julian’s film credits include designing characters for the animated segments in the NFB’s The Magical Life of Long Tack Sam, drawing storyboards for the Cartoon Network’s popular show Ed, Edd ‘n’ Eddy, as well as creating a technique of instant filmmaking that involves drawing, scratching and painting on film as it runs through a projector.
Pixilation
Animation with the human body! Using stop-motion animation techniques, students will animate
themselves. This is a great introduction to special effects.
Instructor: Janos Sitar
Janos Sitar was raised somewhere between Guadalajara, Mexico and Prince George, B.C. He watched lots of cartoons in both of those places. After studying the ancient world, literature in English and cinema at the University of Victoria he wandered off to Montreal to do an MA. While at Concordia he took off on a notion of Winsor McCay and found himself drawing instead of taking notes and studying animator after animator. He has lived in Vancouver since 2005 and continues to work on multiple projects.
Storyboarding
No drawing required. Working in small groups, students will create a short story. Using digital
cameras, they will act out and photograph storyboards.
Instructor: Elisa Chee
Elisa graduated from Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in 2003. She is now in the process of making her second animated film. For the past two years, she has taught in several animation and digital storytelling workshops with the NFB.

The Reel Focus program is $140.00 per class (maximum 30 students). This includes a screening,
