Almitra, a precocious young girl who has not spoken since the death of her father, befriends Mustafa, a mild-mannered poet and revered political prisoner. After seven years under house arrest for his what the Ottoman Empire considered subversive ideas, Mustafa’s teachings have survived his absence. His words offer hope and guidance to the people of a small port city while he remains stoic in his positivity and understanding of the human condition. Ignited to question the authority’s attempt to silence Mustafa’s many forms of expression, the townspeople take a stand. Almitra bears witness, learning deeper truths about herself and the complexity of finding justice.

Inspired by the Lebanese poet Kahlil Gibran’s entire body of work, The Prophet is a wondrous and richly-animated adaptation of one of the most recognized and best-selling volumes of poetry of all time. A passion project of producer-actor Salma Hayek, the film’s animation team is headed by Roger Allers (The Lion King), and showcases the work of nine internationally acclaimed and independent animators, several of whom have had their own films screen at R2R. The Prophet was R2R’s Opening Night Film in 2015. Set to music by Damien Rice and Yo-Yo Ma, Gibran’s timeless verses have been given enchanting new form in this emotive, painterly, and cinematic adventure about freedom and the power of human expression.
